Description

Nuphar lutea, commonly known as Yellow Water Lily or Brandy Bottle, is a robust deep-water pond plant with large, floating green leaves and distinctive cup-shaped yellow flowers that sit just above the water’s surface.

Flowering from late spring through to early autumn, this native species adds a natural, wild look to larger ponds and lakes. The flowers have a unique scent often compared to brandy, giving the plant its alternative name.

Its broad leaves provide excellent surface coverage, helping to reduce sunlight penetration, which in turn can limit algae growth while offering shade and shelter for fish and wildlife.

Nuphar lutea thrives in deeper water and should be planted in large aquatic baskets using aquatic soil. It is best suited to water depths of around 30–100cm (12–40”), where it has room to spread and establish.

Key Features:

  • Distinctive yellow, cup-shaped flowers

  • Large floating leaves for surface coverage

  • Ideal for larger ponds and natural settings

  • Helps reduce algae by shading the water

  • Hardy and long-lived

A perfect choice for creating a natural, established look in larger ponds while improving water quality and providing valuable cover for pond life.
