A compact and aromatic marginal, Mentha pulegium (Pennyroyal) is a low-growing water mint that’s perfect for edging ponds and softening margins. It produces clusters of small lilac-purple flowers in summer, sitting just above dense, creeping foliage that forms a natural ground cover.
With its strong mint fragrance, Pennyroyal adds an extra sensory element to the pond area, while its flowers attract bees and other pollinators. Its spreading habit makes it ideal for filling gaps between stones or planting along shallow edges where it can gently trail.
Thriving in moist soil or very shallow water, this hardy plant is easy to establish and maintain. It’s particularly useful for creating a more natural, established look around ponds and water features.
